“Every picture has a story,………. Every story paints a picture.”
The pages within the ‘Our Memories’ section were written in our own words by us, the crew members of the USS SAILFISH (SS-572). None of us are famous authors,……. However,……
We were the ones who actually spent time living in conditions that would be substandard to any third world prison and breathing air so rank that you could actually taste it. All while doing our job, jobs we were trained and qualified to do.
The war we fought was a ‘Cold’ one,….. one for us that was fought mainly under water with Soviet Union submarines. A silent sort of war that lasted for decades between 1947 and 1991. One that nearly led to the brink of worldwide nuclear disaster. Our war was never seen by anyone other than ourselves within our hull, and our underwater Russian adversaries from within theirs. Our battles and encounters were never televised or made public – they were never seen. Our battlefield consisted of approximately 71% of the total earths surface,….. 139 million square miles of ocean.
These are our stories – told our way – the only way we know how. DBF!!!
