There were many ‘Terms’ and ‘Slang’ phrases that were used on the old Smokeboats – it was as if we had our own language. These were the days when ‘Fossil Fuel’ was king. Terms such as ‘Snorkel Bread’, ‘Fuel King’, ‘Fuel Queen’, ‘Zero Float’ and ‘Exhaust Gas Blow’ are ones we used frequently on the old boats…… and there are many more…. terms and phrases that are slowly being forgotten.
Many of the stories we tell and write are typically laced with many of these terms that most people may not comprehend. So, to help make things a little easier to understand, we’re working on incorporating a Glossary of Diesel Boat Specific terms that were used when sub sailors ‘reeked of diesel’ instead of ‘glowing in the dark’…
Although there are several websites out there that list many commonly used submarine terms, most are ones that I never remember being used on Sailfish.
If you are an old Smokeboat sailor who can still remember a little of the Diesel Boat lingo and slang terms we used back in the day and would like to help build the glossary for this site, please fill out and submit the form below.
